the off-season tryin
#1
PARIS -- Dimitar Berbatov joined Monaco from Fulham on Friday in the latest chapter of the mercurial forwards career on an otherwise quiet final day of the transfer window in France. Monaco is challenging fellow big-spender Paris Saint-Germain for the French title and needed to sign a striker to compensate for Colombia striker Radamel Falcaos long-term injury. Falcao is expected to miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee on Jan. 22. "Im happy, excited, and a little bit nervous to be honest," the 33-year-old Berbatov said. "Im looking forward to training with my new teammates and to open a new chapter in my career." Berbatov shone in spells for Manchester United, Tottenham and Fulham, scoring 94 league goals in 229 league games. Prior to that, he netted 69 goals in 154 league games for German side Bayer Leverkusen. He also scored 48 goals in 77 matches for Bulgaria before retiring from the national team. "Dimitar will bring us all his experience and talent. Of course, his arrival is connected to Falcaos injury," Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev said. "Hes played in big clubs such as Manchester United and hes a great striker. We still have two competitions to play in and he will be an asset." Monaco also reinforced its defence by signing centre half Aymen Abdennour on loan from Toulouse until the end of the season, with an option to buy the Tunisia international. Meanwhile, having spent the off-season trying to sell key players in order to raise funds, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas spent the last hours of the January transfer window turning down bids. Lyons highly-rated midfielder Clement Grenier chose not to move to Newcastle, which is trying to replace Yohan Cabaye after selling him to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. Newcastle coach Alan Pardew had spoken about Grenier in glowing terms and the club was in advanced talks with Lyon. "Ive decided to stay with Lyon and, for me, the best place to be is Lyon," Grenier said Friday. "I had no intention of leaving this winter. We still have a lot of things we want to achieve, both collectively and individually -- with a view to the World Cup. Its the best thing for my personal improvement." There were also offers for striker Bafetimbi Gomis, who will be out of contract at the end of the season and who Aulas desperately tried to sell in August, while the player steadfastly refused to go. Marseille right back Rod Fanni also knocked back a chance to join Queens Park Rangers, which plays in Englands second-tier Championship, according to La Provence newspaper. Midfielder Joshua Guilavogui and former Bordeaux left back Benoit Tremoulinas joined Saint-Etienne on loan from Atletico Madrid and Dynamo Kyiv respectively. Saint-Etienne has an option to buy Tremoulinas for (euro)4 million ($5.4 million) at the end of the season. Nantes signed striker Itay Shechter on loan from Hapoel Tel Aviv with an option to sign him for two years. The Israel forward scored 33 league goals in 61 games during his Hapoel career. The Calgary Flames will see if they can take their recent hot streak on the road when they shoot for a sixth consecutive win Monday night in Montreal.ALLEN PARK, Mich. - After days of cabin fever, the Buffalo Bills were finally able to practice. Then they changed clothes at portable lockers in a hallway — a makeshift setup that underscored just how different this road trip is going to be.The Bills arrived in the Detroit area Friday and held practice that night at the Lions headquarters in Allen Park. The teams schedule has been in flux because of a lake-effect storm that dumped more than 5 feet of snow on the Buffalo region since Monday. This weekends game against the New York Jets was moved from Buffalo to Detroit and will be played Monday night. It felt really good. Being laid up in the house for a while is not fun, tight end Scott Chandler said. It was good to get to just focus on football for a few hours, and not have to worry about anything else.Chandler needed a snowmobile ride to leave his neighbourhood, and he said some of his teammates did too.A local guy, lives around the corner from a lot of us, and they were able to flag him down at a gas station, and he was willing to come help us out. They were trying to plow the road, but it wasnt going to get done fast enough, Chandler said. He was able to come get us and just take us around the corner to where we could get in a car and get to the stadium.Coach Doug Marrone and his staff had been living at the Bills headquarters, going over the game plan and consulting with the team by phone and computer because players were snowed in. Now the Lions are letting the Bills in their practice facility, where Detroit had a workout earlier Friday.Theyve been outstanding, Marrone said. Opening everything up, thats really not heard of in this league, unless they force you to do it. Detroit wasnt forced to do that, so I have a great appreciation for the organization here. We have everything. We have the locker room right behind us, we have the meeting rooms and things of that nature. The venue is a familiar one for Buffalo defensive co-ordinator Jim Schwartz, who was fired in December after five seasons as Detroits coach. Schwartz was carried off the fieldd by the Bills after they beat the Lions in Detroit in October.ddddddddddddHell coach at Ford Field again Monday.Schwartz was not available to reporters Friday.Fans are being offered free tickets to Mondays game, and Bills running back Fred Jackson said hes not sure what kind of environment to expect.Im kind of excited to see what happens, he said. Itll be a different experience for everybody. This is the second time in four years Ford Field has hosted a neutral site game. In 2010, a game between the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants was moved to Detroit because the Metrodome roof collapsed.Fans who showed up for that game witnessed a bit of history. Brett Favres streak of 297 regular-season starts came to an end that night. The Bills are hoping conditions will be less harsh back home next week, but next weekends home game against Cleveland also could be affected by the weather.Bills President Russ Brandon says the team is planning to return to Buffalo after Monday nights game in Detroit. Our plan is to get right back to Buffalo after the game, Brandon said. Well have a short work week as we prepare for Cleveland, but well stay nimble and see how the situation evolves and well go from there.Lions President Tom Lewand was asked Friday if Ford Field could be available for the Bills again next weekend. Detroit hosts Chicago on Thanksgiving, and there are high school championship games scheduled for the venue Friday and Saturday.I dont want to get into projections. Lets deal with whats in front of us right now, Lewand said. I know the folks at the Bills organization are working awfully hard to get themselves prepared not only to play the Jets on Monday night, but the Browns next week. It wouldnt be fair on me to comment beyond trying to get them as successful as possible for a great game on Monday night.___AP Sports Writers John Wawrow in Buffalo, New York, Dennis Waszak Jr., in Florham Park, New Jersey, and AP freelance reporter Mark Ludwiczak contributed to this report.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
